Meet the Team: Catherine Cleary -Director of SilverBirch

This blog begins our Meet the Team series. We will introduce the dedicated individuals behind SilverBirch Healthcare, starting with our Director, Catherine Cleary. Catherine has over 15 years of experience. Moreover, she started her career as a midwife and later transitioned into the care sector, progressing from carer to area manager. Driven by a desire to provide care worthy of her family, she founded SilverBirch Healthcare. The focus is on person-centred support, consistency, and dignity. Her journey truly shapes the values at the core of our operations.

Q&A with Catherine Cleary

What inspired you to start SilverBirch Healthcare?

I wanted to provide quality, person-centred care. Many companies, unfortunately, prioritized budgets over individual needs. Care should focus on the person, not just what works for the company. My family’s experiences with care left me frustrated. For instance, we often found loved ones in disarray or with unsuitable food options. These experiences, along with previous jobs, ultimately pushed me to create a company that prioritizes clients. Thus, we ensure that the care they receive is what I would want for my family, helping them remain independent.

Can you tell us about your background in healthcare?

As a midwife, I gained extensive medical knowledge regarding medications, symptoms, and illnesses. This background significantly helped me notice changes in my clients more quickly. I understood treatments and what to look for, allowing me to guide my team effectively. My nine years in care companies, spanning from carer to area manager, provided invaluable insights into client progression and how to support them. Moreover, I often suggest techniques and equipment not yet widely used, which enhances care quality.

What was the biggest challenge when starting the company?

Financing was, without a doubt, my biggest challenge, as I had no fallback. Leaving my previous job meant I had to make this work to pay my bills. As a single mother, it was daunting. Additionally, I lacked a manager or director to turn to for marketing funds or salary support. At times, the stress was overwhelming, but I knew my passion for helping people would drive my success.

How has SilverBirch Healthcare grown since its founding?

SilverBirch has expanded to three branches. Consequently, our staff now has opportunities for growth as we continue to develop. We provide carers with qualifications and career advancement chances. Additionally, we are attending more networking events and pursuing awards. These efforts not only help us stay updated on new care technologies but also promote our name. This ensures more people receive the care they deserve.

What sets SilverBirch apart from other care providers?

We truly prioritize person-centred care. Transparency is vital; we do not promise what we cannot deliver just to win clients. Our motto, “Putting your care first,” reflects our commitment. I emphasize this to all staff. If a carer is only there to work for a paycheck, they are not the right fit for us. Passion for helping others is essential.

For instance, we proactively ensure clients stay hydrated in summer. Additionally, we encourage healthy diets and suggest products like jelly drops for clients with specific needs. This holistic approach to care distinctly distinguishes us.

About SilverBirch Healthcare

What is the mission and vision of SilverBirch Healthcare?

Our mission is to provide care that I would be proud for my family to receive. We envision helping people remain at home with dignity. Furthermore, we aim to support clients in passing away at home, should they wish. Independence is vital, and we have assisted clients in regaining mobility through tailored exercises. The name SilverBirch symbolizes longevity, which reflects our goal for clients to live long, fulfilling lives.

What services do you provide, and how do they benefit clients?

SilverBirch Healthcare offers personalized home care services. Specifically, we provide companionship, cleaning, shopping assistance, and round-the-clock care. Assistance levels vary; some clients need minimal help, while others require full support. Moreover, we encourage clients to maintain their independence, involving them in cooking and cleaning as much as possible. Our aim is to create a sense of normalcy in their lives.

How do you ensure that care is truly person-centred?

We begin with a thorough assessment to understand each client’s life story, hobbies, and preferences. This information helps us tailor care to their needs. Unlike other companies, we adapt to what clients want instead of imposing standard routines. We prioritize individual desires and, whenever possible, always seek input from clients, ensuring they feel respected and valued.

Why is domiciliary care so important?

Domiciliary care allows individuals to pass away on their terms, at home, with dignity. Many people prefer to age in their homes rather than move to care facilities. Those forced into care homes may lose their motivation and decline in health. Therefore, supporting individuals in living how they choose is essential for their well-being.

How does SilverBirch support families as well as clients?

We keep families informed about care progress, allowing access to daily notes if desired. Additionally, we discuss potential changes in care needs based on our experiences while recognizing each individual is unique. We also assist with connecting families to necessary resources, effectively reducing their stress. This enables families to enjoy meaningful time with their loved ones rather than getting caught up in care logistics.

Quality & Standards in Care

How do you maintain high standards of care within your team?

Our field care supervisors regularly check in on carers and care quality. I maintain consistent communication with my team and clients. We conduct reviews initially every six months to ensure comfort and address any concerns. Clients can contact us anytime with suggestions for improvement. Moreover, our office staff occasionally conduct care calls to gather feedback and uphold high standards.

What training do SilverBirch carers receive?

Carers undergo comprehensive training, including Manual Handling, Medication, and Basic Life Support. Additionally, they complete an online care certificate covering safeguarding, food hygiene, and personal care. Over the last two years, we have implemented induction training to familiarize new staff with our standards and the importance of their roles.

How do you match carers with clients?

Our initial assessments are thorough, covering hobbies, lifestyle, and interests. This information helps us pair clients with carers who share similar backgrounds. For example, we once matched a Nigerian client with a carer from Nigeria, enabling them to connect over familiar meals. Feedback from clients and carers informs future pairings, ensuring compatibility and satisfaction.

What makes a great carer?

A great carer understands the importance of addressing both physical and emotional needs. They should notice any safety concerns and communicate them promptly. A holistic view of clients’ situations is essential. Recognizing the bigger picture helps carers provide the best support possible.

How does SilverBirch handle emergencies or changes in care needs?

We respond to emergencies swiftly, calling services as needed and notifying next of kin. Our review process includes regular check-ins at one week, one month, and three months after a client starts. If any changes arise, we conduct assessments promptly to ensure safety and maintain independence.

The Future of SilverBirch Healthcare

What are your goals for the company over the next five years?

My goals include providing high-quality care across Kent. While other companies may prioritize rapid expansion for profit, I prefer to grow slowly and maintain exceptional care standards. Therefore, I want to build my team’s knowledge and capabilities for long-term success.

Are there any upcoming developments, such as new services or locations?

We have recently expanded into the Gillingham/Medway area and are exploring broader live-in services. These developments are still in progress, and we anticipate welcoming clients soon.

How do you see the future of domiciliary care evolving?

I foresee an increase in AI technology that allows individuals to live independently longer. New advancements will help people engage with their communities rather than feel isolated. As technology evolves, I will promote awareness of helpful tools to meet clients’ needs.

What advice would you give to someone considering care for themselves or a loved one?

Expect some initial challenges. It can be difficult to hand over control, especially regarding personal care. Have open conversations about what to expect from care services. Many fear losing autonomy, but assistance is meant to support, not replace independence. Thus, clear communication is crucial for a successful care experience.

What’s the most rewarding part of running SilverBirch Healthcare?

The most rewarding aspect is making a positive difference in people’s lives. Helping clients maintain independence and live on their own terms is truly fulfilling. Additionally, supporting families through difficult times is gratifying. We strive to provide comfort and dignity, even during the final stages of life.
